Using fragrances to enhance allure is a practice nearly as old as time itself. Even as far back as ancient Egypt, there are stories which tell of the use of scent to attract and enchant the opposite sex. Cologne, or eau de cologne, has the lowest scent concentration, in a predominating base of water and alcohol. Eau de toilette has the next highest concentration, followed by eau de parfum. Then there is the heavenly concoction known simply as perfume. Of the four listed here, perfumes have the highest and most potent concentrations of scent. This explains why perfumes are so expensive and why they can usually only be found at upscale shopping outlets
Perfume manufacturers will use an almost endless variety of sources for fragrances, though some are certainly more universally desired than others. Floral fragrances such as rose, jasmine and violet are age-old favorites and are likewise an age-old ingredient in perfumes. For example, it takes 28 dozen roses and 10,000 jasmine blossoms to produce only a few milliliters of the women's classic "Joy" by the French couturier Jean Patou. For this reason, it has been one of the world's most expensive perfumes, but also one of the most desired - "Joy" has been a hit among womens perfumes since 1930. The most expensive of all perfumes in the world is currently "Imperial Majesty" by Clive Christian. This most ostentatious of perfumes, often called by the deceivingly plain title of "No.1," costs $2,150 per ounce and $215,000 per bottle.
Aside from their stunning clothing creations, perfumes have helped to garner worldwide fame for the most revered designers. For many women and men - especially for the most fashionable - certain designers' perfumes are staples in their lives. Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy are only some of the fashion labels praised as much for their perfumes as for their outfits. Purchasers of these include both everyday consumers as well as celebrities and socialites.
These fashionable perfumes are of course sold at department stores and specialty boutiques, but there are many outlets which offer these scents at discount prices. Many people can find these discount vendor shops close to their own neighborhoods, but there are also countless online vendors with discount designer fragrances.
